ASME at WAU Music Festival Unites Young Musicians in a Celebration of U.S.-China Friendship

Washington, D.C., August 5th to August 9th, 2024 - The ASME@WAU Music Festival, a premier event offering an enriching mix of lessons, engaging classes, chamber music, and solo performances, has successfully concluded its latest edition. This year's festival, which highlighted the vibrant musical traditions of both China and America, brought together top professors from the DC area and across the U.S. to mentor a new generation of musicians. Co-directors Daniel Lau and Dan Zhang sought to create an environment where the highest level of music making could be achieved in a joyful fashion.

Student Experiences

The festival left a lasting impression on its participants. Miya Grimard, an 18-year-old violist from Falls Church High School, expressed her enthusiasm for returning to the festival every year. 16-year-old pianist Elizabeth Davis from New Jersey shared her gratitude for the warm welcome and seamless arrangements, eagerly anticipating future participation. Ziyu Zhao, a 15-year-old double bass player from the Central Conservatory of Music Affiliated School in China, highlighted the festival as a wonderful opportunity to meet American students and perform together, hoping for more events like this. Erhan Zhang, a 14-year-old pianist from the Beijing Haijia School, reflected on how much he learned from both the professors and his fellow young musicians, thoroughly enjoying his time at the festival.

 Organizational Excellence

This year's ASME@WAU Summer Music Festival was a creatively designed program, developed through the collaborative efforts of the American Society of Musical Excellence, Washington Adventist University, Mei Tang Sheng Yue Studio, and Montgomery Sister Cities. Mei Tang Sheng Yue Studio, a key organizer, played a significant role in bringing together festival fellows in Washington, D.C., and collaborating with the Chinese Embassy on the final concert.

 Festival Highlights

The festival's daily evening concerts, featuring performances by both faculty and young fellows, were among the event's highlights. The grand finale, held on August 9th at the Chinese Embassy, was a special occasion celebrating the 45th anniversary of U.S.-China diplomatic relations. This event featured speeches by Minister Jing Quan, Deputy Chief at the Chinese Embassy, Montgomery County Execuitive Marc Elrich, and Maryland Senator Clarence Lam. Over 40 young musicians from both countries took to the stage, performing a lively and joyful selection of music from China and the U.S., symbolizing the enduring cultural ties and friendship between the two nations.
